We decided to make orgami designs since qianwen had her much beloved origami book which was really cool :D haha reminds me of my coursework, all falls under the big category of paper engineering! making amazing sculptures, decorative designs, kinetic art with a piece of paper!

Graduation magazine ‘08!
Somehow for gym the sec 4s do the grad mag every year dont ask me why.

So Amanda (trampoline captain) and i stayed back one day and did this together.
We did it using digital scrapbooking materials from various online websites. Some are free for download:)
Just google ‘digital scrapbooking’ and there should be a few good websites.

I feel that out grad mag turned out as well as we expected and we’re really happy with it! :)

Anyway, just extra ramblings-

I think scrapbooking is a great way of restoring memories the old way, in photo albums, with added design. Its gained popularity recently in singapore and there are a few new scrapbooking stores here. A few that i know of are, one at Plaza Singapura (level 2 i think), a few shops at Takashimaya level 4 forum, and theres also one small shop at beauty world plaza basement!
They sell many pretty patterned paper, and other stuff like ribbons, cut-outs, stamps, buttons, etc etc veyr interesting stuff. Scrapbooking allows a great deal of creativity in creating your own page of memories with all these materials and one thing great about it is the personality that comes out of it.

Otherwise, actually everyday things can look cool on a card. Just think out of the box, and be more observant around the house, and many things can be great decorations. eg Candy/chocolate wrappers!:)

OBS logo design

Sec 3 lifeskills camp logo design!

The theme for lifeskills camp was Self Discovery. We were all going to OBS!

I brainstormed quite a bit for doing this piece and did a few logo designs, but ultimately the idea of metamorphosis, of a caterpillar discovering that there was actually a very gorgeous butterfly inside him appealed to me alot :)

Therefore the reason for this design :) the wings were dotted to suggest that it is not there.

In the end i still feel really inspired by the idea and like it alot, but i dont think my design did justice to it. I should have emphasized more on the caterpillar.

Graces logo design

This are designs i came up with when we were asked to design the lifeskills camp T-shirt logo.
I have no idea why call it logo, its very misleading!
Anyway, the theme for lifeskills camp this year was Graces, so i figured it was more appropriate for the design to be feminine, which i usually associate with hearts, flowers, flowy ribbons, etc graceful stuff like dance. Yes, cliche but ultimately i think they work the best visually to send a “feminine” signal :) ))

This was the basic design that i came up with and decided to use,
then i carried on to add stuff to the background :

This is just an extra :)
it was actually the first thing i drew and a few of my classmates commented that it looked pretty.
But then again i realised, a high-heel shoe on a T-shirt? Whats more, one that 440 people were maybe gonna wear?

uh…..

No…. A very bad idea.

So i scrapped it =]

Platero and I illustration

I got to do this design because one December day my LA teacher approached me to do it for the montage.
She wanted an illustration to accompany a poem that was going to be featured in the 2008 montage. The poem is about a man and his donkey basically, you can go read it in the nanyang montage, the poem won an award! :)

So my LA teacher approached me and asked me to do an illustration of a man in red silhouette, one of him on his donkey, and another of him walking beside his donkey.

I did it by first drawing on a piece of paper, then scanning it into the computer and tweaking it with photoshop. Something really difficult while doing this was getting the donkey to look like a donkey, because whatever i drew just really looked like a mutant horse.

This was what i came up with :/ within a few days

(By the way, try to spot a really stupid error.)

Haha did you spot it? Anyway its the fact that we really cant see silhouettes of trees in the night. hahahah its so stupid but i only spotted it after i sent the design in. Oops!

Anyway i think this two pieces are really ugly, because i didnt have enough time to make sure the proportions are right so its very awkwards. Also it was shrunk in the montage and had borders around it, which made it even worse.

Ah well lesson learnt, understand the requirements before doing anything!

Graces booklet cover

My friend, Rachel, and I were approached by my teacher to do this since she was in charge of the graces camp booklet.

The idea was to have a ‘heart’based design, to represent graciousness, which really is the basis of graces, instead of graceful as projected by designs of women, swans etc.

And the restriction was that it had to be grayscale, to save costs on printing. So all i had to work with white, black and different shades of grey.

This was what i came up with :) and i still like it pretty much.

I cant remember what happened but we had to change it to a more 3D thing.
so i changed it to this:

Personally i prefer the first design. simplicity is good. The second design is too black and cluttered. and what made it worse was the horrible printing as expected which didn’t differentiate the shades of grey, so the design was practically full black which was quite bad :(
